We all know the benefits of a good nights sleep for both our physical and mental health. You never feel good waking up from a disrupted sleep that’s full of tosses and turns. You might even notice that your skin looks lifeless, dull, perhaps even a little more saggy? Recently, Dermalogica has taken on a new wave of missions to help make sleep just that little bit more powerful for maintaining our skin health. The Sound Sleep Cocoon is the latest product to hit their arsenal with the hopes of taking full advantage of our overnight bodily processes to improve our skin when we wake every morning.
Cortisol (our main stress hormone) levels should decrease as we are sleeping, but is kept in excess levels when we don’t have proper sleep. Those elevated cortisol levels act to break down our collagen, and we all know how important our collagen is for maintaining skin elasticity! My overview of how important a restful sleep is for our skin health has been visited previously in my post covering the topic of sleeping masks. But briefly, even though we think our bodies ‘shut down’ while we sleep, in reality it’s quite the contrary. As we are getting our much loved zzz’s, our skin cells are at their most active. During the day our skin is on a constant defence to shield from environmental aggressors like pollution, UVA and UVB sun rays, and the weather (think harsh, cold winds or the dry Summer heat). So during the evening, our bodies go into regeneration and repair mode to help our skin heal from the day’s attacks. So while you think you are relaxing and resting, your skin cells are doing their regeneration dances at high tempo! Given the knowledge on our overnight processes, it’s really no wonder that a lack of restful sleep can have a destructive influence on our skin health, not to mention for our overall health too.
THE SOUND SLEEP COCOON
If the name doesn’t say it enough, Dermalogica’s newest arrival to the night-time skincare product repertoire combines the power of scientific advancements with impressive ingredient technology to help promote restful sleep for healthy, glowing and supple skin. Packaged in a twisting, push-down tub, the Sound Sleep Cocoon has the texture of a gel with the nourishment of a cream, designed to be used as your last product before hitting the sack. Considering the hormone activity involved in the sleep cycle, optimal application of our overnight skincare products should be completed between 9pm – 11pm for best absorbance and breakdown of active ingredients.
The unique feature of this product is the emphasis on coupling ingredients which not only facilitate the regeneration cycle of our skin cells, but also act in inducing a deep, restful sleep so that we give ourselves the best chance of waking up fully rested with radiant, healthy skin. This product takes ‘beauty sleep’ to a whole new level. There are quite a few noteworthy ingredients in the formula, and most are plant-based actives. Persian Silk Tree Bark, Tamarind Seed extract, Evodia rutaecarpa extract (Wu-Zhu-Yu) and Australian Kakadu Plum extract feature as soothing, anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating ingredients. This is my first encounter with Wu-Zhu-Yu extract, but a quick search got me super intrigued by this one. It has origins in Chinese medicine, but has been proven to be effective in topical applications as a skin-soothing agent (Ko et al, 2007). Not to mention Kakadu Plum is a great source of Vitamin C, and Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) are proven time and time again to be some of the most beneficial anti-oxidants for our skin health.
Ingredients that also function to promote restful sleep through an aromatherapy approach are found in the essential oils in this formula. Lavandin Oil (from Lavandula Hybridia – a hybrid between true lavender and spike lavender), is encased in motion-activated capsules that slowly release as we toss and turn during sleep. Lavender oil is well known to be a relaxing agent and is widely used in pillow mists to be used before bed to induce sleep so to have something that slowly releases when you need it most is pretty genius and I haven’t seen this approach with other products using lavender oil. I did want to find more info on the micro-capsule innovation to learn more about the mechanism behind it’s activity, but I couldn’t! Sandalwood and Patchouli oils are also included to increase the aromatherapeutic approach of this product to relax the senses and sooth the mind, and I’m totally loving it because I have a real soft spot for the woody scent of sandalwood.
Now, if you’re familiar with Dermalogica you’ll know this isn’t the first time they’ve created products to enhance our skin’s nocturnal regeneration cycle. The Nightly Lip Treatment is an absolute favourite of mine to repair dehydrated, cracked lips and flaky perioral area I get during the cold and extremely dry Winter climate in Adelaide. What makes this product again so different to previous overnight products is the super fun and interesting app to go along with the Sound Sleep Cocoon. Yes, you read that correctly. Dermalogica have created an app to be used alongside the Sleep Cocoon so you can take full advantage of your sleep cycle. Even better when you can still continue to use it when you run out of your Sleep Cocoon gel. The app features a soft musical track to help put your mind and body at ease before you drift off. It’s actually patented technology, where the track is designed to elevate sleep-inducing alpha and theta brainwaves. It has a 20-minute timer on it too so it will automatically switch off should you switch off too! Other features include some helpful tips and a deep sleep massage tutorial so you can create a healthy bedtime routine. I’m so in love with the app and it’s such an interesting approach to be used alongside your lovely little Sleep Cocoon.
My initial reaction to the product was noticing the smell of it. Being an aromatherapeutic innovation, it does have a strong scent of lavender and sandalwood so if you’re not one for these type of scents you won’t appreciate the product. However, it does slowly dissipate once on the skin. For me, I looooooved the scent. It’s definitely a scent you would expect to find when you walk into a dreamy day spa. Another feature that got me hooked into this product is the texture and finish of it. Every other overnight cream designed as a sleeping mask does not really ‘sink’ in to skin until after hours later. You can feel them sitting on top of your skin wet, and true to a sleeping mask, you are not meant to rub it in for it to absorb. Even though I never really had negative feelings towards that particular aspect of sleeping creams, I have fallen for the finish of this gel. It almost feels like a pore-filling primer, and has a satin finish up until it absorbs into the skin. And then it disappears. No residue, no sticky or wet feeling. It’s completely dry and sunk in within minutes, and this to me is totally new for a sleeping cream. Now, the only misgivings I have towards this product is the price. At $120, it’s quite expensive and not accessible to everyone. You are really paying for the reputation of Dermalogica here to create a formula packed full of proven ingredients, and the totally unique approach to our sleep cycle both in the Sound Sleep Cocoon gel and the app.
So, it seems there is much to the Sound Sleep Cocoon that meets the eye. It represents a new approach combining skincare with the power of sound and scent to ensure we get the best sleep possible for healthy skin. You can shop the Dermalogica range on RY.com.au.
